Why you can’t “just think in Chinese”.
“Just think in Chinese” can be a bit like someone telling you, "Just be yourself”.
It sounds nice, but it’s not very helpful.
I know this advice comes from a good place. They want you to avoid the trap of constantly translating in your head because English and Chinese don’t translate directly well.
But in the beginning, it’s hard to avoid thinking and translating in English.
From my experience, the only true way to start "thinking in Chinese" is through immersion—listening to and absorbing the language as much as possible.
Think about the last time you heard a catchy jingle repeatedly until it got stuck in your head. That’s how it works with learning Chinese too.
If you’re constantly exposed to the language, listening to it all the time, completely immersed, you’ll start thinking of Chinese phrases even when you’re not actively studying.
This is why I don’t recommend trying to “think in Chinese” because thinking in Chinese naturally happens after extensive immersion and input.
Instead, focus on immersing yourself in the language by listening to Chinese podcasts, watching Chinese videos and shows, and surrounding yourself with the language.

This is a cool word I learned yesterday when talking to a friend about his recent break-up.
眷恋 (juàn liàn)
Translation: Nostalgia; to feel attached or sentimental towards something or someone.
Example sentence: 她对老家的山水总有一种深深的眷恋情怀。(Tā duì lǎo jiā de shān shuǐ zǒng yǒu yī zhǒng shēn shēn de juàn liàn qíng huái.). She always harbors a deep sense of nostalgia for the scenery of her hometown.
